Berkley announces bid for Ensign seat in Senate - John Ensign - Salon.com

Congresswoman Shelley Berkeley will run for the U.S. Senate seat now held by Nevada Republican John Ensign.

Berkeley's campaign released a statement Thursday in Washington putting the seven-term Democrat from Las Vegas in a race against northern Nevada GOP Congressman Dean Heller.

Berkeley and Heller each easily won re-election in November, and have been considered front-runners to replace Ensign since he announced in March that he won't seek a third term. A Democratic lawyer, Byron Georgiou, is also in the race.

BBC News - Stellar nursery's stunning loops

An image from the European Southern Observatory's (ESO) 2.2m telescope in Chile has yielded a striking view of the NGC 3582 nebula.

Vast loops of gas can be seen in the image, looking like the ejecta of stars known as solar prominences.

Here, the gas comes from dying stars. At the same time, radiation from young stars ionises the gas and gives it a bright glow.

The image, by astrophotographer Joe DePasquale, was shortlisted by the observatory in its "Hidden Treasures" competition, and the ESO has now released a video showing where in the night sky this stellar nursery and graveyard sits.

Gmail Gets Personalized Backgrounds, Email Prompts | News & Opinion | PCMag.com

Bored with the way your Gmail inbox looks? Now you can make your own!

On Thursday, Google launched the ability to personalize your Gmail inbox background by uploading your own image, or creating your own theme. Previously, users could only select from Google's pre-made themes and colors.

Themes in Gmail are great—there are tons to choose from and they give your inbox a personalized look," Google wrote in a blog post. "But we've heard from many of you who thought it would be even better if you could give Gmail an even more personalized look and create themes completely on your own." To start, click on the "Options" logo on the upper right hand corner of your inbox, then "Mail Settings." Select the "Themes" tab and "Create your own theme."

Claims For Jobless Benefits Up 27,000 Last Week : NPR

More Americans applied for unemployment benefits last week, the first increase in three weeks. Still, the broader trend points to a slowly healing jobs market.

The government says applications for unemployment benefits rose 27,000 to a seasonally adjusted 412,000 for the week ended April 9. That left applications at their highest point since mid-February.

Applications near 375,000 are consistent with a sustained increase in hiring. Applications peaked during the recession at 659,000.

The four-week average of applications, a less volatile measure, rose to 395,750. However, applications have dropped about 6 percent over the past two months. At the same time, businesses have stepped up hiring.
