An 87-year-old man was killed this afternoon after touching a downed power line, MLGW spokesman Glen Thomas said.
The incident happened around 1 p.m. at 548 Melody Lane in East Memphis, Thomas said.
It's uncertain if he tried to pick up the line, or if it fell on him.
The damaging winds and thunderstorms that uprooted trees, downed power lines and triggered a tornado warning in the Memphis area have moved eastward, but Memphis Light, Gas and Water officials can't estimate how soon power will be restored to the area. The utility has started contacting outside crews to bolster the workforce.
MLGW spokesman Glen Thomas said about 62,500 people remain without power as of 2:30 p.m. Damage is spread across the county, Thomas said, and 47 circuits are out. Thomas said the biggest danger to the public is downed power lines.

For each watch, probabilities for particular events inside the watch (listed above in each table) are determined by the issuing forecaster. The "Low" category contains probability values ranging from less than 2% to 20% (F2-F5 tornadoes), less than 5% to 20% (all other probabilities), "Moderate" from 30% to 60%, and "High" from 70% to greater than 95%. High values are bolded and lighter in color to provide awareness of an increased threat for a particular event.

BP’s Gulf of Mexico drilling could resume in July - MarketWatch
LONDON (MarketWatch) — BP PLC could be just a few months away from resuming drilling for oil in the Gulf of Mexico after reportedly asking to strike a deal with U.S. regulators less than a year following the Deepwater Horizon disaster that killed 11 and triggered the worst oil spill in American history.
